Leg break scam boyfriend jailed

A man who broke his girlfriend’s leg as part of a £100,000 attempted personal injury scam has been jailed for 3 years.

After watching  ‘no win no fee’ advertisements from personal injury lawyers on TV, Gordon Thomson, and his then girlfriend Elizabeth Hingston, decided that he would break her leg in a bid to defraud Plymouth Council. Their plan was to claim the injury was sustained when a wall had fallen onto her.

The pair were caught when the police raided Thomson’s house for an unrelated matter.  During the raid they found paperwork that had been filled out to send to the council to make a claim and mobile phone video footage of Thomson breaking his partner’s leg filmed by a friend.

They never formally made an injury complaint, the only result was that Miss Hingston had a pin put in her leg and was on crutches for six months. She was not charged for her part in the attempted scam.
