Expert states that death could have been avoided

Saundra O’Connor from Co Galway, died in February 2008 after undergoing a laparoscopy procedure in January 2005. Ms O’Connor underwent a laparoscopy procedure at the Galway Clinic; she developed an infection immediately following the procedure, which caused septic shock, multiorgan failure, cardiac arrest and severe brain damage.

Expert Witness Dr John Bonnar, Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Trinity College Dublin, stated that the death could have been averted if her gynaecologist had followed good practice.

Dr Bonnar also stated that Consultant Gynaecologist Dr Andrea Hermann’s care fell seriously short of what is expected from a Consultant Gynaecologist .
