Surveyors to evaluate work on flood defences

Surveyors will be in Morpeth this week to inspect work on new flood defences. The Environment Agency has enlisted contractors Halcrow to investigate various parts of the town.

The information from the surveys will be used to supplement data gathered since Morpeth's flood last September and reports about the existing defences.

The Agency started designing new defences for the town almost ten months before the September  disaster last year. Four months have been trimmed off the planning stage and it is hoped that more time can be saved as the scheme progresses.

The proposals are for either new flood walls, or a combination of flood walls and upstream storage areas to hold back water.

The Agency along with Northumbrian Water and Northumberland County Council, have also tried to reduce the risk of surface water flooding.
