Brain imaging can help Psychiatrists
A new 3-D brain scan called a "spect image" is helping psychiatrists to get into the heads of their patients. The scan shows the results of after a radioactive material is injected into the patient's bloodstream and is absorbed by the brain to show how it functions. Blue areas are calm. Active areas show up red. White signals indicate the most activity.
Psychiatrists says knowing this can help them better diagnose and treat patients. It can help them understand the brain and its activity.
The scan is generally used on patients who have been diagnosed and are on treatment with poor results.
