How safe is your data when travelling by train

Many people commute around the country by train and laptop use has increased since Wi-Fi became free to travellers earlier this year. But who else is reading your computer on the train?

Using electronic means such as searching for an incorrectly configured Wi-Fi card, deploying Wireshark and Kismet (sniffers), or setting up as a rogue access point, data can be accessed.

There are many train surfers who conducts their business, no matter how sensitive, with disreguard for their surroundings. The majority fail to consider even the most basic of security measures. User names and login passwords are visibly entered, encrypted volumes opened and virtual private networks accessed.

Also of help, many companies place their logo on laptops as wallpapers or individuals name tags prominently on laptop case, allowing quick and easy targeting. Combined with an individuals' security pass, I am provided with all manner of useful information.

Next time you are sitting on a train contemplating working whilst travelling, remeber you are in a public place and act with caution.
